Next steps for Hastings Town Deal

On Friday (June 25),  Hastings Borough Council’s Cabinet voted for the next stage of the Town Deal regeneration programme.

Councilors unanimously agreed to sign the Heads of Terms on the £24.3m funding agreement from the government. Now work begins on matching our projects to the funding allocation by the end of August, and then on developing the detailed business cases for the individual projects in our Town Deal Investment Plan.

The Town Deal projects fall within seven key programme priorities designed to address local skills needs create new and long-term investment, new jobs, increased visitor numbers, footfall and spend within the town. Projects include the construction of new green and low carbon centre of excellence, new employment spaces, mixed-use developments with new homes, leisure and creative and cultural facilities as well as major improvements to Hastings Castle and other public spaces in the town.

In addition to the £24.3m from the government, these projects are set to generate a further £85m of match funding from local organisations and other funding sources.

The Cabinet agreed that the funding was a great step to help impact the significant economic, skills, investment, social, and health challenges facing Hastings, which is being further impacted by COVID-19. The opportunities created by the Town Deal Investment Plan will help kick start the next stage of our renewal of inclusive growth, with the aim to have greater and better direct benefits to our residents living in the most deprived areas whilst also tackling the climate crisis.

Officers from the Town Deal programme team produced a presentation that tells the story of the Town Deal programme from the start to where we are now (July 2021).
