Hastings Town Centre Public Realm and Green Connections Project –Traffic Regulation Orders

East Sussex County Council is consulting on four proposed Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) as part of the Hastings Town Deal Public Realm and Green Connections Project. These are proposed within the town centre.

Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) are legal measures that allow changes to how roads are used. These can include amendments to parking arrangements, loading bays, waiting restrictions, pedestrian areas, and vehicle access. The proposed changes are designed to support public realm improvements to the town centre, enhance connectivity, and create a safer, more attractive environment for everyone in Hastings.

The TROs form an important part of delivering the wider vision for the town centre – helping to prioritise walking and cycling, improve accessibility, and support local economic activity.

Details of the proposed orders, including plans and supporting information, are available here:

The consultation period will run from Friday 5 June to Thursday 25 June.

Physical copies will also be available to view at County Hall Reception, St Anne’s Crescent, Lewes BN7 1UE and at Hastings Library, Brassey Institute, 13 Claremont, Hastings TN34 1HE.

Tree Felling Consultation

In addition to the above, East Sussex County Council is also undertaking a statutory consultation on the proposed felling of four of the ten trees on the eastern end of Robertson Street. This is to accommodate elements of the pocket park, SuDS planting, and cycle lane.

Details of the affected trees, the reasons for removal, and proposed replacement planting can be viewed here.

In March, East Sussex County Council announced the completion of the final designs, following public consultation and extensive technical work. The finalised plans set out a clear timeline for delivering a greener, safer, and more welcoming town centre.

Notes

In 2021 Hastings was one of 101 UK towns to receive a share of the previous Government’s Towns Fund to kickstart the regeneration of the town with funding of £24.3m. The Town Deal Board has allocated £10m of Town Deal money to support this project.

Following public consultation from January to March 2024 and a review of the consultation outcomes, the project was given approval to proceed in September 2024. The decision to maintain two-way movement for buses, taxis, and cycles on Havelock Road and Harold Place was approved by the East Sussex County Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Environment. The report can be viewed here.
